There are several theories about how posting began, The one I heard as a child was that many years ago, before automobiles, the mail was delivered by horseback. These mail carriers would spend hours in the saddle, trotting from postal-stop to postal-stop. Trying to ride a sitting trot for many hours a day would be exhausting for both horse and rider. Postal carriers began to rise slightly in the saddle to smooth the ride out. This method eventually became called “posting” and began to be used by others who wanted a smoother trotting experience.
