There are some important things to know first. We need to start with understanding what a “trot” is.

The trot is a two-beat gait of the horse. It is faster than the walk. The horse performs the trot by lifting each diagonal pair of legs alternatively. It is when each diagonal strikes the ground that the rider feels the “bump” in the saddle.

A diagonal is the opposite legs of the horse. In other words: when the horse’s right front leg comes forward their back left leg comes forward too. When the horse’s left front leg comes forward their back right leg comes forward too. Refer to the illustration below;
