The term ‘Riding Position’ refers to our total body position as we are sitting in the saddle. We need to have a “balanced seat” positioned above the horse’s “center of gravity.
The goal in riding our horse is to be relaxed and balanced on the horse’s back, not tense and rigid. We want to ride “light” in the saddle, not slumped over. Think as if someone has a string attached to your head and is lifting you up.
The following is a check list of how your body should be aligned:
Back: Back should be straight. Sit “tall” and “light” in the saddle
Shoulders: Shoulders need to be back but don’t stiffen your back. Practice good posture exercises at home!
Seat: Know what your balance point is and sit on it! Strive for lightness in your legs.
Heels: Heels down. Put weight into your feet. Be sure that you don’t push your leg forward as you put weight into your heels though!
Head: Head up! Watch where you are going not down at your horse.
Chest: Chest out…look proud as you ride. Think winning thoughts!
Legs: Your legs need to be underneath you. If you glance down at your knee your toe should line up right underneath it.
Feet: The stirrup should be on the ball of your foot not your instep.
